Quick answer: Maintaining a ceramic coating is simple — wash every 1–2 weeks with a pH-neutral, ceramic-safe shampoo and a clean microfiber mitt (two-bucket method), dry with a soft microfiber towel, and apply a SiO2 boost spray a few times a year. Skip automatic brush washes, wax, and harsh detergents.

The maintenance routine

One of the best things about a coating is how little upkeep it needs. The goal is gentle, regular washing that keeps contaminants from sitting on the surface:

DoDon't
Wash every 1–2 weeks with pH-neutral, ceramic-safe shampooUse wax-based 'wash & wax' or household detergents
Use the two-bucket method + clean microfiber mittUse a dirty sponge or single bucket (causes swirls)
Dry with a soft microfiber towel or blowerLet it air-dry (water spots) or use an old bath towel
Use a SiO2 boost spray a few times a yearApply wax over the coating (clogs hydrophobics)
Pressure-rinse and touchless wash when possibleRun it through stiff-brush automatic washes

Why gentle washing matters

The coating makes dirt release easily, so you don't need aggressive products — and you shouldn't use them. Stiff automatic brushes and abrasive sponges put fine swirls into the coating's surface, dulling the gloss. A careful two-bucket hand wash preserves the slickness and beading you paid for.

Boost sprays — the easy refresh

A SiO2 ceramic boost (topper) spray, applied to a clean, dry car a few times a year, re-energizes the water beading and adds a layer of protection on top of the coating. It's the right way to 'top up' a coating — unlike wax, which works against it. For the fundamentals, see what is ceramic coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you maintain a ceramic-coated car?

Wash every 1–2 weeks with a pH-neutral, ceramic-safe shampoo and a clean microfiber wash mitt (two-bucket method), rinse thoroughly, dry with a soft microfiber towel, and apply a SiO2 ceramic boost spray a few times a year. Avoid automatic brush washes and harsh detergents.

How often should I wash a ceramic-coated car?

Every one to two weeks is ideal. The coating makes dirt rinse off easily, but regular washing prevents contaminants from sitting on the surface and keeps the hydrophobics strong.

Can you pressure wash a ceramic coating?

Yes — a pressure washer is safe and effective on a cured ceramic coating, and it's great for touchless pre-rinsing. Keep the nozzle a reasonable distance from the paint and avoid concentrated blasts on edges.

Do you need a ceramic boost spray?

It's not mandatory, but a SiO2 boost (topper) spray a few times a year refreshes the water beading and extends the coating's life. Apply it to a clean, dry car after washing.

What soap should I use on a ceramic coating?

Use a pH-neutral, ceramic-safe car shampoo. Avoid wax-based 'wash and wax' products and harsh degreasers or household detergents, which can degrade the coating over time.

Can I take a coated car through an automatic car wash?

Avoid the ones with stiff spinning brushes — they cause swirls. Touchless automatic washes are okay occasionally, but a gentle hand wash is always best for preserving the finish.
